What is ASMR?

If you’re a fan of guided meditations or white noise, then you may have already heard of the term ASMR. ASMR refers to the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response and is named after a physical tingling sensation which many people have found difficult to explain. Often starting in the scalp and moving down through the limbs, the sensation can be triggered by many different things, from sounds to physical touch.

What is ASMR?

Although science is still not able to explain the sensation in detail yet, it is generally believed that our endorphins are responsible for causing it. Endorphins play an essential part in parent-child bonding as they are released whenever a parent and child are close. This release of endorphins lets the brain know that it’s safe and able to fall asleep.

There are currently more than 13 million ASMR videos on YouTube featuring everything from hair brushing to paper crinkling. Rapper Cardi B is a big fan and even created an ASMR video for W Magazine.

In 2018, the University of Sheffield and Manchester Metropolitan University published a study on ASMR which found that there are potential links between physical and mental wellbeing and ASMR videos. People who watched ASMR videos were found to have significantly reduced heart rates while viewing the videos than those who were not. It also found significant increases in positive emotions such as relaxation and feelings of social connection. This indicates that ASMR videos can have as much of a positive impact as mindfulness meditation or music.

With so many videos on YouTube, people who are affected by ASMR are bound to find something that triggers them. Popular triggers include:

Whispering

Playing with hair

Scratching

Tapping

Gentle touch

Concentration

Slow movements

Listening to an ASMR through a smart pillow is a great way to get a relaxing ASMR experience that will send you right off to sleep.
