First of all, your goals have to be realistic. It’s absolutely wonderful to have dreams of jetting off to far flung places and leaving the 9-5 drudgery behind, but it’s also important to make sure this is a realistically achievable goal for you. And if it isn’t, you can simply adjust your expectations to a more achievable aim.
The next step is to get super specific about what it is that you want to achieve. For example, saying that you want to get fit is vague and lacks accountability. However, saying something like “I want to be able to run 20k and do 100 push-ups by the end of the year” means you have an actual figure to work towards and can track your progress as you work towards that goal.
When you have your goal in mind, set a date for when you hope to accomplish it by. This means you will stay focused and you’re much less likely to lose interest in it.
Think about ways in which you can measure the progress of your goal. For example, if you say, “I want to save money” this doesn’t give you much to work with in terms of measurability, but if you say, “I want to save £100 per month”, you’re far more likely to stick to your goal as you see the results in progress. This is why things like fitness trackers are so great for keeping you in good exercise habits as you can adjust and improve everything you are measuring.
Once you have your goals set in stone, it’s time to make a plan of action. Make sure that you set aside time each day or week for your goal and hold yourself accountable for this. By sticking to this regular habit of making time for working towards your goal, in no time at all you will have taken plenty of actionable steps towards achieving what you hope to achieve in 2021.
