How to Get the Most Out of Your Yoga Practice

Time and time again, studies have proven the health benefits of a regular yoga practice. Whether you manage 5 minutes every now and then or a full hour a day, just a little bit of yoga can go a long way in keeping your mind and body happy and healthy.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Yoga Practice

Sometimes it can feel as though you’re not getting as much out of your yoga practice as you usually do. From feeling like all of the poses are an uphill struggle to wondering where your excitement for the practice went, once in a while we all need a little help to get back on track with getting the most out of our practice. Here are a few ideas to bring the zing back into your yoga poses.

Practise gratitude

It can be easy to go through the motions without even thinking, so instead of switching off and tuning out, try injecting a little gratitude into your practice. When holding each pose, think of one thing that you are grateful for. Whether you think of something small or big, each thing you show gratitude for will help to remind you of all of the positive things in your life.

Take it outside

Sure, practising at home or in a warm yoga studio is great, but have you felt the sand between your toes as you stretch out in downward dog or listened to the gentle babbling of a stream as you hold warrior pose next to a freshwater river? It’s amazing how transformative your practice can be if you switch up your surroundings.

Change the record

If you’ve been listening to the same yoga CD over and over, or you simply have no yoga soundtrack at all – now’s a good time to change it. Check out yoga playlists online or seek out recommendations from fellow yogis.

Eat well

There’s not much point in looking after your body if you aren’t providing it with the right nutrition. Eat clean, lean proteins, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and lots of whole grains and beans to keep your energy levels up.

Get some sleep

Doing yoga without much sleep can have a huge impact on how you feel about your practice. Make sure you get at least 7 hours a night to keep your mindset and energy levels on track.

Set an intention

If you find yourself in a challenging pose, set yourself an intention such as “smile”, “relax” or “honour my body” to help you keep the rhythm of your breath and focus the mind.
