Muscle injuries are usually the result of a pull, strain, or tear in the muscle fibres or tendons. This can damage blood vessels and lead to bruising and bleeding in the local area. While the damage might not look too bad, under the surface it can be quite a debilitating injury unless it is cared for properly.
This is where sleep comes in.
Sleep is vital for recovery for a number of reasons. While your body is sleeping, it produces growth hormones that facilitate cell reproduction and regeneration. These hormones also stimulate the regulation of the metabolism which enables repairs to take place while you rest. The body also releases a hormone known as prolactin, which has anti-inflammatory properties which are perfect for relieving and repairing any sore joints and muscles.
Another super important function of sleep is the reduction of energy consumption. While you’re sleeping, your body sends 40% less blood flow to the brain and directs it to the muscles for repair instead. The reduction in energy usage means that the body can use what energy it does have much more efficiently. So, while you’re sleeping your body is still working super hard to repair itself for the next day.
It’s always a good idea to start a workout with a warm-up and end it with a cool down to prevent muscle injury, but if you are looking to reduce the chances of getting a muscle strain in day-to-day life then there are a few things that you can do.
- Take up regular exercise to keep your body in optimum condition
- Stay hydrated to make sure your muscles are working effectively
- Sleep on a quality mattress that provides your body with the support it needs to recover
