Are You Sleeping Too Much?

If you are known to hit the snooze button one too many times, then it might be that sleeping in is doing you more harm than good.

Are You Sleeping Too Much?

Sure, getting enough sleep is an essential part of maintaining good health and staying alert and focused during the day. But getting too much sleep can have quite the opposite effect.

Studies have shown that regular oversleeping can be linked to diabetes, obesity, heart disease and an increased risk of death.

So, how much sleep do you need in order to be healthy?

The right amount of sleep varies a lot over your lifetime and depends on a few key factors, namely your age, activity level, health, and lifestyle. The average recommended amount of sleep for healthy adults is between 7-9 hours, however this can vary during periods of illness or stress.

Research indicates, however, that people who sleep for more than 10 hours per day can have poorer health profiles than those who sleep for less. This is because longer periods of sleep are often of poorer quality than shorter periods of sleep, which means that the regenerative effects of sleep do not have such an impact.

This can lead to poor physical health and can also impact on mental and emotional well-being, leading to depression and anxiety. Sleeping too much can also lead to feeling more tired, which might sound counterintuitive but it’s true! Feelings of fatigue are much more likely if you have overslept.

While each individual is different, it is essential to ensure that you are getting the right amount of sleep for your age and lifestyle. Although it can be tempting to hit the snooze button, especially at the weekends, remember that it can often leave you feeling more lethargic and leave you at risk of developing physical health issues.

So, next time your alarm goes off, jump straight out of bed – you will thank yourself for it in the long run!
