Not everyone hit by menopausal night sweats wants, or needs, a new mattress. If your current mattress is supportive and reasonably young but simply sleeps hot, a cooling mattress topper changes the surface you actually lie on for a fraction of the cost of replacing the bed. It is the most capital-efficient cooling upgrade there is, and this short guide covers when it is the right call, when it is not, and what to buy.

Why a topper works for menopausal heat

Your body only exchanges heat with the few centimetres of mattress it actually touches. That is why a topper, which replaces exactly that contact layer, can transform how hot a bed feels without touching anything underneath. A cooling memory foam topper swaps a dense, heat-storing surface for one engineered to breathe and conduct warmth away, and adds a layer of pressure relief in the same move, welcome if menopausal joint aches have arrived alongside the heat.

When a topper is the right call, and when it is not

Honest test: press on your mattress where your hips sleep. If it is still even, supportive and free of dips, but runs hot, a cooling topper is the smart, proportionate fix. If the mattress is sagging, softened unevenly, or past seven or eight years old, a topper will simply follow the sag underneath it, and the honest answer is a new mattress, our menopause mattress guide covers that route in full. A topper is an upgrade, not a repair.

Frequently asked questions

Will a memory foam topper make me hotter?

Old-style dense memory foam would, which is where the reputation comes from. A cooling topper is engineered the opposite way: open, breathable foam with a cool-touch feel, designed to shed heat rather than store it. The material family is the same; the construction is not.

Topper or new mattress: how do I decide?

Judge the mattress underneath. Supportive and even but hot: topper. Sagging, dipped or past seven or eight years: mattress, because a topper conforms to whatever is beneath it, faults included. If in doubt, the topper's 30-night trial makes it a low-risk first experiment.

What else helps with night sweats?

Layered natural-fibre bedding, a cool room around 16 to 18 degrees, a moisture-wicking protector, and a cooling pillow at the flashpoint. And if night sweats are seriously affecting your life, speak to your GP or a menopause specialist, effective treatments exist beyond anything the bedroom can offer.
