As anyone who has suffered from insomnia knows, once you enter the vicious cycle of worrying about your lack of sleep, it becomes ten times harder to drift off.
Luckily, there are plenty of scientifically proven ways that can help you to switch your mind off and catch up on some much-needed rest:
Keep it cool – to encourage the melatonin production that your body needs in order to trigger your sleep-wake cycle, it is recommended that you keep your room as cool as possible Taking a warm shower before bed so that your body experiences the drop in temperature when you go to bed will not only relax your muscles but should also speed the melatonin production process up.
Breathe – spending between 5 to 20 minutes just focusing on your breath is a great way to switch your brain off and remain in the present. If you feel your mind drifting, don’t worry just bring it back to your breath. You will find that the more you practice this technique, the easier it will be to stop thinking completely. Playing nature sounds or meditation tracks through a smart pillow is a great way to keep yourself focused on your breath.
Strike a pose – you don’t have to do a full workout before bed, but holding a few simple yoga poses that are specifically designed to help you sleep will give you a better chance of drifting off when you get into bed.
Hide the clock – there is nothing worse than watching the minutes tick by as you toss and turn trying to get to sleep. Knowing what the time is, actually increases your stress levels, so do yourself a favour and hide it!
Use lavender – known for its relaxing qualities, a few drops of lavender essential oil on your pillow is a great way to encourage your mind and body to relax and rest.
