Maintaining good posture is vital when it comes to reducing headaches, keeping your body healthy, and boosting your confidence.
However, making sure that you have the correct spinal alignment can be tricky. With so many people working from home, hunching over smartphones or slouching on the sofa, poor posture is becoming an increasingly common ailment.
Bad posture can cause all kinds of health implications, such as poor circulation, poor digestion, migraines, and backaches. Luckily, there are a few things that you can change today to keep your spine in tip-top condition.
1. Check your workstation
If your job involves sitting at a desk or in a car for long periods of time, it’s super important that you check that your workstation is set up to ensure good posture. When at your desk, keep your back straight, feet flat on the floor (or on a footrest if they don’t reach) and ensure that your weight is distributed evenly on the chair. Avoid crossing your legs and keep your chair adjusted so that your knees bend at a 90° angle.
2. Stand up tall
When we are busy and tired it can be super easy to give in to the forces of gravity and slouch forwards when we’re standing. It can be even harder to maintain good posture if the core muscles haven’t been exercised for some time as it takes a lot of strength to stand up straight. But if you keep adjusting yourself when you remember, eventually it will become easier and your body will naturally fall into the correct position.
3. Sleep on it
We spend more than a third of our lives in bed, so it is super important to ensure that we maintain great posture, even while we’re sleeping. If your mattress is saggy, worn, or noticeably old then it may be time to upgrade your sleep surface to one that provides the proper support. Mattresses tend to need replacing every 5-8 years, so if you are waking up with sore joints or an aching back, now might be a good time to upgrade. Opt for an orthopaedic mattress to ensure that you get the best night’s sleep possible.
