New research shows that it is possible to change the composition of micro bacteria in the gut through exercise alone, without actually making any dietary changes. The findings indicate that exercise can encourage the production of short-chain fatty acids that work to reduce inflammation in the gut and keep it healthy.
The study followed 17 women over the course of 6 weeks of bicycle endurance training. Prior to the study, the women were overweight and led inactive lifestyles. During the study, the participants were not permitted to change anything else in their lifestyle, such as diet or sleep patterns, to ensure that the effects of the exercise could be measured properly. The training was controlled by monitoring the heart rate of the participants.
At the end of the 6-week period, it was found that the participants had a decrease in inflammatory gut bacteria and an increase in metabolism-boosting healthy bacteria.
There are other studies that suggest the presence of this healthy bacteria could potentially protect against diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
There you have it folks, exercise can actually be more important than diet! That’s not to say you can eat all of those doughnuts, though…
