A mattress topper and a mattress protector sit in the same place on the bed and do completely different jobs. One changes how the mattress feels, the other keeps it clean, and most people who ask which to buy actually need the second one first.
Quick answer: A mattress topper is best if your mattress feels too firm or has lost its comfort, because it adds a 3 to 8 cm layer that changes how the bed feels. A mattress protector is best for everyone, because it is a thin washable barrier that stops sweat, spills and dust mites reaching the mattress and keeps your guarantee valid. REM-Fit makes one of each: the Halo topper uses 4 cm of open-cell memory foam with a 30-night trial and 10-year guarantee, and the Tencel Cool Protector was Good Housekeeping's Best Cooling Protector for 2026.
What is the difference between a mattress topper and a mattress protector?
The difference is thickness and purpose: a topper is a thick comfort layer you feel, a protector is a thin barrier you should not notice. You can use both, and they go on in a fixed order.
A mattress topper is a separate layer of foam, latex, feather or fibre, usually 3 to 8 cm deep, that sits on top of the mattress to change its feel. It adds softness to a firm mattress or restores some comfort to one that has gone flat, but it does not protect the mattress from anything.
A mattress protector is a fitted, washable cover, usually a few millimetres thick, with a waterproof or moisture-resistant membrane that stops sweat, spills, skin cells and dust mites getting into the mattress. It changes the feel of the bed very little and comes off for washing like a sheet.

Who should buy a mattress topper?
Buy a topper if your mattress is structurally sound but feels too firm, or if a mattress under about seven years old has lost some of its surface comfort. A topper changes feel, so it is a comfort purchase rather than a protective one.
Memory foam toppers add pressure relief at the hips and shoulders, which makes them the usual choice for side sleepers on a firm bed. Latex and fibre toppers add a softer feel with more bounce. Depth matters: a 2 cm topper is barely noticeable, 4 to 5 cm changes the feel clearly, and anything over 7 cm can undo the support of the mattress beneath it.
A topper cannot fix a mattress that sags, dips in the middle or has broken springs, because it follows the shape of whatever is underneath. If that is the problem, our guide on whether you need a topper or a new mattress will save you the money.
Foam toppers also hold heat unless the foam is open-cell and the cover breathes, so hot sleepers should check both before buying. The memory foam topper guide covers density, depth and cooling in detail.
Who should buy a mattress protector?
Everyone who owns a mattress should have a protector on it, from the first night. It is the only thing standing between the mattress and the 500 to 700 ml of sweat an adult body can produce overnight.
Without a barrier, that moisture plus shed skin cells go straight into the mattress and feed dust mites, which produce the droppings that trigger allergies. Allergy UK advises using breathable, allergen-proof barrier covers on mattresses, duvets and pillows, and washing bedding at 60 degrees or above to kill mites. Our guide to dust mites in your bed explains the rest of the routine.
A protector also protects the paperwork. Most mattress guarantees and sleep trials, REM-Fit's included, can be voided by staining, so a mattress without a protector is a mattress you cannot return or claim on. The whole thing goes in the washing machine, which is far easier than cleaning a mattress after a spill.
The choice between protectors comes down to the surface fabric. Cotton is the breathable everyday option, bamboo is naturally more breathable and hypoallergenic, and Tencel actively wicks moisture for hot sleepers. All three REM-Fit protectors use the same Miracle Membrane underneath, and the mattress protector buying guide explains how to choose.
Do you need both, and which goes on top?
You need a protector; you may also want a topper. If you use both, the topper goes directly on the mattress and the protector goes over the topper, so one washable layer guards both the mattress and the foam beneath it.
Putting the protector under the topper leaves the topper exposed to sweat and spills, and most toppers cannot be washed beyond their cover. If your topper is deep, buy a protector with a stretch skirt that fits mattresses up to 35 cm so it holds over the combined height.
Where REM-Fit fits
REM-Fit makes one topper and three protectors, all sized to fit the hybrid mattresses as well as any other UK-size mattress. Buying a protector with a REM-Fit mattress also extends the sleep trial from 100 nights to 200.
The Halo Memory Foam Topper uses 4 cm of open-cell visco memory foam with a mesh-bordered Re-Ax cover for airflow, elastic straps and an anti-slip base, and a removable washable cover. Expert Reviews named it Best Cooling Topper, and it comes with a 30-night trial (100 nights when bundled with a REM-Fit mattress) and a 10-year guarantee. It is the like-for-like against any 4 to 5 cm memory foam topper, and the rest of the mattress toppers collection lists the sizes.

Mattress topper vs protector: which is better value?
A protector is the better value of the two by a wide margin, because it is the cheapest item on the bed and the only one that protects the most expensive. A topper is good value only when it solves a comfort problem a new mattress would otherwise have to.
Think of the protector as insurance for the mattress guarantee: one spill without it can void a 15-year guarantee, and one wash with it removes the problem. Because it goes on first and comes off last, it also extends the useful life of whatever is underneath, topper included.
A topper earns its price when the mattress is firm but sound, or when a new mattress needs a softer surface for one sleeper. It does not earn it when the mattress has already failed, which is why our guide to topper vs new mattress is the read before buying one for an old bed.
Mattress topper vs protector FAQs
Last updated: August 2026
Do I need a mattress topper and a mattress protector?
You need a protector on every mattress from the first night, because it stops sweat, spills and dust mites reaching the mattress and keeps the guarantee valid. You only need a topper if the mattress feels too firm or has lost surface comfort while still being supportive underneath.
Does a mattress protector go over or under a mattress topper?
The protector goes over the topper. Put the topper directly on the mattress, fit the protector over both, then add the sheet, so the one washable layer guards the mattress and the topper together. A protector that fits mattresses up to 35 cm deep will stretch over the combined height.
Does a mattress topper protect the mattress?
No. A topper adds comfort but has no waterproof layer, so sweat and spills pass through it into the mattress, and most toppers can only have their cover washed. Protection comes from a protector with a membrane.
Is a mattress protector worth it?
Yes. An adult can produce 500 to 700 ml of sweat in a night, and without a barrier that moisture and shed skin feed dust mites inside the mattress. A protector is machine washable, and it stops staining that would otherwise void a sleep trial or guarantee.
Can a mattress topper fix a sagging mattress?
No. A topper follows the shape of the mattress beneath it, so it will sag into the same dip within a few nights. A topper suits a mattress that is firm but sound; a sagging mattress needs replacing.
How often should you wash a mattress protector?
Every one to two months in normal use, and straight away after a spill or illness. Allergy UK advises washing bedding at 60 degrees or above to kill dust mites, so check the care label for the highest temperature your protector allows.
