Stretch
Getting into a habit of performing certain stretches before you go to bed will help to loosen your muscles and help your spine get into the right alignment when you lie down. Try clasping your hands behind your back and extending your arms as you open your chest forward and hold for 30 seconds. The yoga pose cat/cow is also great for releasing tension in the spine, kneel on all fours and gently round your back upwards, pulling your chin to your chest. Then extend your chin to point at the ceiling while stretching your abdomen towards the floor. Repeat at least 10 times.
Mattress
Stretching is a great start but the right sleep surface can make a world of difference to your sleep posture. If you haven’t replaced your mattress for six years or more, then it’s time to think about upgrading your mattress to one that provides the correct support for your spine. Orthopaedic mattresses are specifically designed to promote the correct spinal alignment, so treat your back and make your next mattress an orthopaedic one.
Pillow
Once you’ve sorted out your sleep surface, a supportive pillow should be the next thing on your list. Believe it or not, all pillows are not equal when it comes to your back! A pocket sprung pillow provides the right amount of head and neck support to ensure that your spine stays correctly aligned all night.
Position
Sleeping on your front is a huge no-no when it comes to maintaining good sleep posture. This is because your spine is unable to get into a neutral position which means stress is placed on joints, neck, and muscles. The best position to sleep in is on your side, with a pillow placed between your knees. You can also sleep on your back to keep good posture.
